Our flagship product, the Anzen Climate Wall, is a plug-and-play system delivering heating, cooling, and ventilation, designed to enhance Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings while being easy to retrofit into any home.
We’re driven by a mission to create a sustainable, equitable future. Join us to help shape the future of clean, efficient home heating and cooling.
Why this role matters
We are looking for an experienced Control Systems Engineer with expertise in HVAC control systems to lead the development of electronics and firmware for our innovative heating and cooling systems. The ideal candidate will have a background in developing smart control strategies, designing and testing electronics, and working closely with mechanical, thermal, and design engineers to ensure seamless integration of components. Firmware development, electronic simulations, and hands-on bench testing of electronics will be critical aspects of this role. The engineer will also be responsible for designing thermoelectric control systems and ensuring that all electronics adhere to industry safety standards.
What you’ll do
- System Integration: Collaborate with the product development team to integrate control systems with hardware, including sensors, actuators, and user interfaces. Integrate advanced cause-and-effect logic and feedback loops to maintain optimal performance.
- Testing and Validation: Conduct hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulations, bench testing, and field testing to validate control strategies.
- Compliance & Safety Standards: Ensure all electrical and electronic systems comply with relevant IEC, BS, and other regional safety and product standards for HVAC products (air conditioners, heat pumps, and boilers).
- Make-or-Buy Analysis: Conduct make-buy decisions regarding custom-built electronics versus off-the-shelf solutions, ensuring the best balance between cost, performance, and scalability.
- Risk Management: Identify, define, and manage work packages to de-risk areas of the product design early in the life cycle, ensuring robust and reliable outcomes.
- Technical Reporting: Produce detailed technical reports, supervise detailed design and manufacture, and prepare and manage tender documentation.
- Team Leadership: Lead and supervise a team of engineers, fostering a collaborative environment that promotes creativity, innovation, and excellence.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Utilise excellent communication and technical writing skills to convey complex ideas clearly and effectively. Strong interpersonal skills are essential for thriving in a startup environment, where teamwork and adaptability are key.
What you’ll bring
Essential experience and skills:
- Experience: 10+ years of experience in HVAC product electronics (e.g., air conditioners, heat pumps, and/or gas boilers) with a focus on control systems and smart controls.
- Thermoelectric & Power Electronics Control: Strong understanding of thermoelectric systems, including experience in simulating and designing control algorithms for thermal management and cooling/heating cycles.
- Machine Learning Integration: Knowledge of integrating machine learning algorithms or predictive analytics for advanced HVAC control and optimisation strategies.
- Firmware Development: Proven experience in firmware development for embedded systems using C/C++, Python, or similar programming languages, Machine Learning algorithms and experience in non-linear control systems.
- Simulation Expertise: Expertise in using simulation tools such as MATLAB, Simulink, SPICE, or equivalent for control strategy design (Opentherm, Weather and Load Compensation) and electronic circuit modelling.
- Control Algorithms & Feedback Systems: Expertise in developing feedback control systems, control algorithms (e.g., PID, model predictive control, sliding mode control) for precise thermal regulation using Peltier modules.
- Prototyping & Manufacturing: Experience in designing for mass production as well as custom one-off builds, working with international manufacturing teams in India, China, and Europe.
- PCB Design: Experience in designing Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) for HVAC products or other complex hardware systems, with familiarity in PCB layout tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle).
- Thermal System Integration: Knowledge of integrating thermal systems with electronics, specifically in the design of heating/cooling systems for air conditioners or heat pumps.
- Industrial Communication Protocols: Familiarity with communication protocols like Modbus, CAN, I2C, SPI for industrial automation and control systems.
What we offer
- Salary range: £50,000 – £55,000 per annum + Equity options.
- 30 days of annual leave, plus bank holidays.
- The opportunity to work alongside the core team, on challenging problems every day.
- Be at the forefront of cutting-edge clean technology, with the chance to drive tangible impact on the UK’s decarbonization goals.
